Valencia, Spain to host the 2007 Americas Cup!
Valencia, in the north of the Costa Blanca are to host the 2007 America's Cup, making the Spanish port of Valencia the first port in Europe to do so since 1851. Valencia, on Spain's eastern coast, was chosen because of its advanced infrastructure for tourism and the steady summer weather conditions can all but guarantee that sailing’s oldest tournament will start without hinderance.
The 2007 Valencia Americas Cup will be the 32nd race, and is the first time that the event has been held off mainland Europe in its 152 year history. Valencia is the only one of the European challengers to gain hosting rights until a swiss boat lit up the stage at the last Americas cup.
The goal of the 2007 race is to increase the sports popularity and involve more countries after Australian and American dominance in the past. Valencia, a beautiful city, is Spain's third largest city, surrounded by some of Europe’s most popular holiday resorts, and draws massive numbers of tourists every year for what has been seen as a very elitist sport in the past.
The Alternative cities were Portugal's Cascais, France's Marseilles and Naples in Italy, however, all of which lost to the charms of Valencia. Jochen Schuemann, a senior member of the Alinghi crew said “Valencia was a great choice because of the consistant wind conditions in the western Mediterranean”. A severe lack of wind in Aukland caused racing to be delayed for almost 15 days, but on average only one day is wasted during the summer in Valencia according to the event organisers. The shape of the coastline means that during the race, the boast will be in clear view for much longer than in the past races. The Grand Finale is due to take place in June 2007 between the reigning champions Alinghi and the best of the rest.
